The Papers Index is a selective index of articles, mainly of local interest, published in The Press from 2 January 1995. The urban edition is indexed. The Papers Index also selectively indexed the Christchurch Star from 14 October 1998 to 9 September 2005. From 14 September 2005, The Star Midweek and The Star Weekender are indexed. The Star Community newspapers, published every Monday, are not indexed. From January 2002, articles in the Star newspapers are indexed only if coverage does not also appear in The Press; the exceptions are obituaries and reviews which are indexed from both. Also included are some articles published in The Press in the 1980s, indexed from clippings An index to The Press for the period 1861-1994 is available on microfiche in the Aotearoa New Zealand Centre. An index to The Lyttelton times for the period 1850-1860 is also available on microfiche. The local newspapers Christchurch Star (1868 to 1909), Lyttelton Times (1851 to 1862), Akaroa Mail and Banks Peninsula Advertiser (1877 to 1920), Ellesmere Guardian (1891 to 1945) and Oxford Observer (1889 to 1901) are available via Papers Past collection of digitised New Zealand Newspapers.
